Surveying and Data Collection
MCTAL’s Surveying and Data Collection pillar provides the high-fidelity intelligence that
informs every stage of the infrastructure lifecycle. By combining traditional geophysical rigor with
next-generation remote sensing, we transform raw physical environments into actionable digital datasets.
Serving as the ‘eyes and ears’ of our integrated model, our surveying and data collection work does not
exist in a vacuum. Rather, it populates the Digital Infrastructure ecosystems we build (see page 6) and
flows directly into our Specialised Engineering workflows (see page 9).
Advanced Geospatial and Geophysical Surveying
Our terrestrial surveying capabilities go beneath the surface and beyond the visible
horizon. We provide the foundational mapping required for the region’s most ambitious projects, utilising a
suite of geophysical technologies to de-risk underground operations.
Our Core Geospatial and Geophysical Services Include
- Geophysical Subsurface Imaging: Utilising Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Electrical
Resistivity Tomography (ERT), and seismic refraction to map bedrock depth, identify soil
heterogeneity and locate buried utilities or archaeological anomalies without excavation.
- High-Precision Geodetic Surveys: Establishing primary control networks using Global
Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) positioning to ensure
millimetre-level accuracy across vast project sites.
- Hydrographic Surveying: For coastal developments and reservoir management, we employ
multibeam echosounders and sub-bottom profilers to map underwater topography and sediment
layers.
These capabilities are essential for the safe routing of oil and gas pipelines
and the stable foundation of large-scale civil structures, ensuring that our Specialised
Engineering teams work with a complete understanding of the terrain.
Next-Generation Aerial and As-Built Surveying
To meet the scale of regional giga-projects, we have moved beyond traditional land
surveying into rapid, large-scale aerial acquisition. We utilise Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and
aircraft equipped with advanced sensors to capture the ‘as-is’ state of the world with unprecedented
speed.
Our Aerial and as-built Capabilities Include
- Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR): Deploying aerial LiDAR to generate high-density 3D
point clouds, capable of penetrating vegetation and accurately mapping complex topography
and existing infrastructure.
- Photogrammetry and Orthomosaics: Producing high-resolution, geo-rectified maps and 3D models
that provide a visual and measurable snapshot of project progress.
- As-Built Verification: Using 3D laser scanners for High Definition Surveying (HDS) to
document completed structures. By comparing these as-built models against the original BIM
designs, we identify deviations in real-time, allowing for immediate corrective action
during the construction phase.
Rich, Flexible Data for Modelling and Analysis
Data collection is only as valuable as the insights it generates. We deliver data in
flexible, industry-standard formats that integrate directly into decision-making engines. We focus on
data fluidity, ensuring that a survey conducted today can be used for engineering analysis tomorrow and
facility management for the next twenty years and more.
We Provide
- BIM and GIS Integration: Seamlessly merging high-precision site data with GIS and BIM allows
stakeholders to visualise spatial relationships, environmental impacts and logistical
constraints in a single unified interface.
- Volumetric and Change Analysis: Utilising sequential survey data to provide precise
calculations of earthworks, material stockpiles and construction progress.
- Environmental and Geotechnical Reporting: Transforming raw sensor data into comprehensive
reports that inform environmental impact assessments and structural design parameters.
Integrated Data Flow and Security
A unique differentiator of our business model is the integration of data collection
with our Digital Infrastructure pillar (see page 6). In an era where geospatial data is a strategic
national asset, security and seamless movement of this information are paramount.
Our Integrated Data Framework Ensures
- Secure Data Transmission: Leveraging our fibre optic networks and encrypted satellite links
to move massive datasets from remote field sites to centralised command centres without risk
of interception.
- Live Sensor Feeds: Integrating IoT sensors into a real-time data flow. This allows for the
continuous monitoring of infrastructure health, such as bridge vibration, pipeline pressure
or reservoir levels.
- Cyber-Physical Protection: Applying our full-scope cyber security protocols to the data
collection chain. We protect the integrity of the data from the point of capture (the sensor
or drone) to the point of analysis, ensuring that the digital truth of the infrastructure
remains untampered.
